Using donated embryo

29 December, 2005

Question:

In your answer on embryo donation the issue of a Jewish couple donating an embryo was briefly touched upon. But what about a Jewish couple using a donated embryo in which the sperm was from a Gentile?

Answer:

Thank you for your feedback.

While (as we discussed in our response) an embryo from a Jewish couple could raise questions about unwitting future incest, an embryo from a non-Jewish couple can raise questions about the child’s religious status.

Therefore, a Jewish couple considering receiving an embryo donation should seek halachic guidance. We offer personal consultations with a Nishmat Fertility Counselor, a Yoetzet Halacha who has completed additional specialized training in this area. Consultations are free and can take place in person, by phone, or via internet conference.
