Blood during relations after missed pills

24 May, 2005

Question:

My wife was on the 24th day of her cycle and she forgot her pills while we were away for the seders.

After we got back, as we began making love, there was some blood.

What does it mean and what do we do?

Answer:

Your wife is now considered a niddah, and should wait five days and then seven clean days as usual.  Regarding the pills, she should finish a week without taking active pills and then start a new pack.

If any negligence was involved, you should both offer tzedakah as a form of teshuvah and possibly fast for a day – after Pesach and Isru Chag are over.

The next time you have relations, your wife should perform a bedikah beforehand and afterwards. If blood is seen as a result of intercourse again, please consult with us or an appropriate rabbinic authority immediately.
