Brown during shivah neki’im

9 June, 2005

Question:

The day I was meant to go the mikve, I started having brownish staining. The bedika that morning was fine as were all the others previously. It is already a few days and I have been unable to get clean. I am not currently on any hormone medication and I am not nursing. I made an appointment to see a gynecologist but the appointment is still two weeks off. In the meantime I am very frustrated and nervous that something is wrong.

Answer:

Brown staining does not necessarily invalidate your clean days. Please show your stains to a rabbi as soon as possible. If you no longer have them, you can bring an item of the same color to the rabbi to describe concretely what you saw.

Your gynecologist should be able to help you. If you are very concerned, you might wish to call back and explain why you need to see her sooner.
