Red stain turning to brown

27 December, 2010

Question:

Hi. I love your site and I am grateful for what you do.

There have been times when my bedikah has had a red stain but then when I look again a little while later after it has dried, the stain has turned brown. What if, by the time I show it to a rav, it is no longer red?

Thank you for your help.

Answer:

Thank you for your kind words.

In a case in which her bedikah is clearly red at first, it makes a woman niddah even if it dries to brown later.  In cases of doubt, however, a rav may rule leniently, depending on what he sees.  Unless you are expert in evaluating colors, we suggest bringing such a cloth to a rav for evaluation, including a note about what you first saw, under what lighting conditions, and how certain you are about the initial shade.
