Makeup on Shabbat

17 June, 2004

Question:

I usually put on makeup before Shabbat and leave it on for the duration of the Shabbat. Can I immerse in the mikvah Friday night with makeup on (fresh makeup put on right before Shabbat), or must I remove it as I do when immersing during the week?

Answer:

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Questions about makeup and mikveh on Shabbat arise frequently. Please see our article here for a detailed discussion, including several halachic possibilities for handling the situation, and feel free to get back to us with any further questions.
