Tearing and stitches

3 July, 2004

Question:

I had a large baby about 9 weeks ago and had a bad tear. I was able to go to the mikvah several weeks ago and last night finally thought I was healed enough to resume relations with my husband. But when we tried it hurt a lot and this morning I noticed some bleeding from where the stitches were. Does this make me a niddah again? Thanks for your help!

Answer:

Mazal tov on the baby! If the bleeding can be attributed to the tear and/or stitches, it does not render you a niddah. If you are fairly sure that this is the source, since you actually saw bleeding from this area, then you can make this decision yourself. If you are not sure, and the bleeding did fall within the leniencies of stains, a health care professional can help determine the source of the bleeding.

You may find that using lubrication beforehand makes relations less painful.
