Periods while breastfeeding

19 December, 2002

Question:

I’ve just started my period for the first time after the birth of my son. He is four months old and I am breastfeeding full time. Will I have regular periods from now on, or is this just a one-time thing?

Answer:

Breastfeeding causes hormonal changes which generally suppress ovulation, leading either to amenorrhea (lack of menstruation) or to irregular bleeding. The point at which regular ovulation resumes postpartum when breastfeeding varies from woman to woman, and therefore, it is unpredictable when your periods will again become regular .
