Increasing observance

16 July, 2004

Question:

My husband and I follow family purity laws except for not touching during my niddah period. We do abstain from marital relations, but I would also like to try not touching. How can I suggest that we do this without making him feel bad or rejected?
Thanks for your help! This is an incredible site.

Answer:

Congratulations on your desire to be more careful with the family purity laws. The best way to approach your husband without hurting his feelings is to find a quiet, calm moment and explain that you wish to more carefully observe the laws. Let him express his feelings. Agree on a trial period for starters. Schedule another time to discuss how it went – what was successful, what was difficult, what could have made it easier, and so on.
