Assisting wife with breastfeeding
22 July, 2021
Question:My wife gave birth a week ago, and is nidda. She has been exclusively breastfeeding our baby. Our baby is not latching on properly when feeding which has resulted in extreme pain for my wife, including cracked and bleeding nipples. To establish the correct position for the baby to latch on, my wife needs assistance from somebody else – this involves placing the baby on her breast and positioning the baby onto her nipple.
Halachikally, am I able to assist my wife in these circumstances?
Answer:Mazal tov on the recent birth of your baby!
If your wife is unable to position the baby herself and there is no one else available to assist her, you may help position the baby. You should do your best not to actually touch your wife.
We hope your wife is working with a lactation consultant for guidance.
