Contraceptive options at 48

1 March, 2021

Question:

I am 48 in good health.

I had problems with the copper IUD so I got it removed. According to my blood tests, I’ve begun menopause but I want to use birth control until my periods stop fully.

My gynecologist doesn’t like the idea of hormonal contraception, due to my age.

What do you recommend?

Thank you.

Answer:

The main halachically-permitted options would be a diaphragm with spermicide, spermicide on its own (e.g., vaginal contraceptive film), or Phexxi, a new spermicide-like contraceptive. Though spermicide alone or Phexxi have a lower efficacy than a diaphragm with spermicide, that is likely to be of less concern given that you have begun menopause. To learn more about these options, please see here and here and consult with your physician. Then please get back to us with any follow up questions.
