Is hysterectomy permissible to remove fibroid?
15 December, 2024
Question:I have a very large (10cm) fibroid and three doctors have recommended hysterectomy to remove it including ovary removal. I am 51 and in perimenopause. They say it will improve my “quality of life” and reduce risk of cancer. I’m not sure it’s actually a health risk for me to leave the fibroid, unless it keeps growing, or if this surgery would be mainly preventative.
Is hysterectomy halachically permissible in my case?
Answer:Thank you for reaching out to us.
If the preponderance of medical opinion is that the fibroid should be removed, and (as is often the case) it is medically recommended to remove the uterus and ovaries as well, then both hysterectomy and oophorectomy are fully halachically permissible. We hope you will discuss all the options with your physician to make the best choice for you.
Fibroids do tend to shrink in menopause. If your preference is not to have it removed, then you should not hesitate to discuss that with your physician to see if it is a reasonable choice given your clinical situation.
