Period starting soon after intimacy

30 July, 2024

Question:

Hi, this issue arose only now that I’m in my late 40s so I guess it could be related to hormonal changes.

Sometimes, after intimacy, my period starts right away, i.e., stains on clothing afterward. Even though I checked myself before and was clean (it being in the mid–20s of the cycle).

This doesn’t always happen but it’s been twice now.

Any suggestions?

Answer:

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Many women in their late forties spot in the days prior to their periods.

Medically, it’s possible that this reflects the uterine lining being less stable, which might be triggered through sexual intercourse. We’d recommend seeing your physician to clarify and to explore whether a treatment such as Duphaston would be in order.

Halachically, as long as staining is not found immediately after relations, it is subject to the usual leniencies of stains. We discuss these leniencies as well as recommended precautions to take regarding staining and relations in our site’s page on staining, here. If you have found stains immediately after relations, please follow up with more details about what you saw and how long after relations you saw it.

Please be in touch with any further questions.
