Are our black neighbors comfortable? Do we stop ourselves from making racist jokes and refuse to tolerate them at all? Examining our own conduct is our first step forward.
I bought my house 12 years ago from a very nice family. They had many friends and seemed clean cut and down to earth, so I was surprised when a neighbor came over to greet us on our second day and told us he was so happy that we were there and the family before us was not. “They were so strange,” he continued. “They were actually happy when a black family moved in next door.
