Babies born prematurely often need additional medical care, depending on how premature the baby is and other medical factors.
Signs of preterm labor are similar to those of full-term labor. They can include regular contractions that become stronger in intensity, more frequent, and closer together; leakage of fluid; and sometimes other symptoms. Vaginal bleeding may also be associated with preterm labor.
A woman who is concerned that she has begun preterm labor should immediately contact her medical provider. If she is unable to reach her medical provider, she should go for evaluation at an emergency room in a hospital with a labor and delivery unit.
