C-section & pidyon haben
February 10, 2009

Question

In delivering my firstborn son, I was first induced but only reached 4cm before a c-section was necessary. Technically, my womb was opened before the c-section; but we (my husband and I) assumed the c-section overrode all else and did not seek a pidyon haben. Was this correct?

Answer

Mazal tov on the birth of your son!

Yes, when a baby is delivered via c-section, there is no pidyon haben. The determining factor is how the child was delivered.
