Carrying furniture During Niddah
July 11, 2004

Question

I know that the harchakot, for instance not passing objects, is to avoid the potential for touching, and the feelings of intimacy. Is it permissible for us to carry large, heavy objects together (couch, dresser), when there is no likelihood of touching, while I am in niddah?
Thank you in advance.

Answer

The halacha does not distinguish between light and heavy items. Moving furniture can generally be delayed until after mikveh or someone else can be found to share the task. In special circumstances, such as when the wife is carrying something that is about to fall and break, "halachic common sense" would allow her husband to come to her aid.
