Doubling up on minipill
16/09/2019

Question

First of all, thank you very much for your website. It has helped me tremendously reading everyone else’s questions and your responses.
I was wondering, I was bleeding on Cerazette when I started taking it, and then the doctor suggested I take 2 pills per day to stop the bleeding, which worked right away. He said to do that for a month and it’s been working great. The problem is, will I start bleeding again when I go back to one pill? Is it dangerous to take 2 pills a day?

Answer

While the minipill can be doubled up to help minimize staining, it is not meant to be used that way as a long term solution. If you wish to continue doubling up on pills, please consult with your doctor.
You may experience some staining after reverting to one pill per day. You should be sure to take the pill at the same time every day to help minimize staining. You should also take precautions against becoming niddah from any further staining by wearing colored underwear or disposable pantyliners and waiting at least a few seconds (ideally 15 seconds) after urinating before wiping. See our articles on stains and toilet paper for more details.
Please feel free to get back to us with any further questions.
This response has been updated to reflect the rulings of our current Rabbinic Supervisor, Rav Kenneth Auman, regarding waiting before wiping.
