Tubal ligation vs. salpingectomy
May 7, 2019

Question

In a case where, due to a significant risk of sekana to the mother’s life if another pregnancy is attempted, a tubal ligation would be permitted… is there a halachic difference between tubal ligation vs. salpingectomy?

Answer

If there is risk to a mother’s life, and other forms of contraception are not possible, sterilization would be permitted. Tubal ligation is generally the first choice. Salpingectomy could be permitted if the physician believes it is needed in that particular case. However, in general there is a halachic preference to minimize the amount of destruction to the reproductive organs.
