Becoming an egg donor
January 9, 2025

Question

Hi, for many years now I have contemplated becoming an egg donor. I am an older single, and I've been told by blood tests that my egg count is high . Not being able to carry children myself (because I'm not married), it would make me very happy to give this gift to someone else. I do understand the psychological implications, but I am more concerned about the halachic ruling. Thank you.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out with this sensitive question. We admire your desire to help others build their family.

Halachically, we follow the ruling that a single woman may donate her eggs. You can read more about that here.

Our rabbinic supervisor, Rabbi Kenneth Auman, says that you should only donate to an observant couple, since there are views that you would be the halachic mother of the baby, and you would not want to be responsible for having a non-observant child. Second, if this will be an anonymous donation, where the recipient will not know the identity of the donor of the egg, there should be some reliable agency/registry that will keep track of this in case in the future there are “yuchsin” questions – questions regarding the child’s genetic and halachic ancestry.

As you point out, there are halachic, medical, and psychological implications and effects, and we recommend that you speak with a Yoetzet Halacha Fertility Counselor so that you can more fully understand what you need to know, and so that you can choose a path that most fits your circumstances. This is a discreet and private service.
