Saw reddish discharge from body
November 9, 2014

Question

I happened to look down while going to the bathroom (novice mistake) and saw a thin stream of maroon⁄brown coming out of my body– am I necessarily nida? I went off birth control a month and a half ago and have not gotten my period yet.

Answer

Unfortunately, if you saw a reddish (or brown with a reddish hue) discharge coming out of your body, you are rendered niddah. You need to wait five days from when you saw the discharge before counting the seven clean days.

If you get your period at some point during the next twelve days, you need not wait five more days before counting a new seven clean days. As soon as the bleeding stops you may perform a new hefsek taharah and start counting the clean days (as long as five days have passed since you originally became niddah).
