Light monthly staining with Mirena a period?
October 6, 2014

Question

I have a mirena coil fitted. My periods essentially stopped almost as soon as it was fitted and for several months I noticed no staining or anything. Recently I’ve been getting very light staining every few weeks. The staining is brown not red and I wear black underwear and use coloured toilet paper so is not enough to render me niddah as far as I understand. Does the fact that this repeats itself more or less monthly change things though? Should I be counting it as a period even though I never need to wear a liner or anything because it’s nowhere near heavy enough? Many thanks in advance.

Answer

Even though the staining you describe occurs on a monthly basis, it does not render you niddah as long as it is only found on colored underwear, or on toilet paper (and you waited at least a few seconds after urinating before wiping). Unless you experience an actual flow of blood, such staining may be disregarded, and you may continue taking precautions against becoming niddah from this staining. We also advise abstaining from intercourse until the staining subsides and your status is fully clarified. (Stains larger than a gris on a white garment, or accumulating to that size on your skin, could make you niddah, depending on the color. Brown stains generally require evaluation by a halachic authority.)
