Became niddah after missed pill
03/11/2022

Question

I recently missed one birth control pill, on Sunday, and started up again on Monday. On Tuesday, I found brown staining, and today, Wednesday, there was red blood and flow enough that I am niddah.
Should I stop my birth control now (my type does not have placebo pills so I just don’t take it for a week) and just get my period a bit early? Or should I keep taking the pills and risk longer staining? Thanks!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
It is fairly common for a missed pill to lead to some irregular bleeding.
Stopping early can make good sense in this type of case.
Generally, speaking, a woman can stop her active pills early–as long as she’s already used eighteen of them–without losing contraceptive efficacy. Still, we encourage you to check your package insert or consult your physician.
