Checking bedikot without sunlight
March 27, 2026

Question

I learned in kalla class that when I do my hefsek and any of the afternoon bedikot, I need to keep them overnight and look at them again in the morning. This had lead to problems for me occasionally.

I have since learned that a lot of what I was taught was not necessary and sometimes problematic. Is this one of those things? Does it need to be checked in direct bright sunlight? Is the lightbulb in the bathroom enough? What if the weather is dark and cloudy? Thank you!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

If you perform a bedikah and are confident that it is valid, then you do not need to take it outside or to a window, or to save it until morning for better lighting.

If you have a question about a bedikah, then it is best to reevaluate it in daylight, in the shade, and then to bring it for evaluation if it is still unclear.

In pressing situations where you need an answer before daylight will be available, you should consult a halachic authority.
