Comb or brush?
October 19, 2020

Question

Does hair need to be combed with a comb before tevila, or is brushing also acceptable? What about a wide comb?

Answer

Some poskim require the use of a fine-tooth comb to comb one’s hair during the chafifah. Other poskim are more lenient and permit the use of a wide-tooth comb or a brush to remove tangles from one’s hair. Therefore, we recommend using a fine-tooth comb unless there are pressing reasons (you don’t have access to a comb, you have very thick or kinky hair and it is difficult to use a fine-tooth comb, etc.), in which case a wide-tooth comb or brush may be used.
