Dark brown stains during clean days
June 18, 2026

Question

I have a situation that seems to happen almost every month. My menstrual bleeding clearly ends, but for the next two or three days I sometimes continue to have cream or brown-colored discharge. It looks like normal clear discharge mixed with old blood rather than fresh bleeding, and it is never bright red.

This only started after I began taking birth control pills. Before taking them, I did not have this problem.

I sometimes find dark brown discharge on bedikot, or find dark brown stains larger than a dime on my white underwear. If these brown stains are considered niddah every time, it would mean that I would have to wait about 6–7 days after my menstrual bleeding has already stopped before I could even begin counting my shiva nekiyim almost every month.

I have read that women who experience recurrent staining are sometimes advised to wear colored underwear during Shiva Nekiyim so that every stain does not become a halachic concern. Is this correct? If so, would this guidance apply in my situation?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

A cream or light brown color with no reddish tint, such as the color of coffee or milk or lighter, is not a niddah color and does not affect the clean days, even if it's found on a bedikah cloth.

If you find darker brown discharge on a bedikah, or a darker brown stain larger than a gris (around the size of a US dime or Israeli shekel) on white underwear, then your first step is to clarify with a halachic authority whether this is a niddah color. There is a good chance that it isn't. If it is not a niddah color, then it does not interfere with your clean days. No further steps need be taken unless the colors get darker or more reddish.

If it turns out that it is a niddah color, then please get back to us or a local halachic authority for individual guidance on completing the clean days while staining.

Please don't hesitate to write to us again.
