Embryo transfer
August 13, 2024

Question

We are preparing to start our IVF journey and I am wondering if there is specific guidance on preparation for a transfer. We already have halachic guidance on the semen collection, but wondering if the semen and excess egg/embryo destruction has any halachic guidelines (I believe there is no problem in destroying excess), and if there are any special preparations for the transfer (mikveh, etc.). Thank you!

Answer

We wish you much hatzlacha with the transfer, and may you find yourself in a healthy pregnancy soon!
It is permissible to dispose of excess semen, eggs, and embryos.
If necessary, the embryo transfer may be performed while you are niddah. The transfer does not render you niddah if it takes place when you are tehorah.
Please see our page on Fertility Treatment for a more detailed halachic discussion of these and related issues.
