IUD removal during surgery
January 18, 2016

Question

Several weeks ago I had surgery that reinforced my pelvic floor with a tissue graft and put in a urethral sling using a vaginal incision. The doctor also removed my IUD during the surgery. The incision caused a lot of bleeding (I lost about half a liter of blood during the surgery), but I would think this would be considered Dam Maka. Do I have to go to the Mikvah, maybe because I had the IUD removed, or maybe anyway?

Answer

You are correct, the bleeding after the surgery may be attributed to dam makkah and did not render you niddah. In general, IUD removal does not render a woman niddah and any bleeding found within two days of the removal may be attributed to dam makkah. In your case, even if the bleeding lasted longer you may attribute it to the surgical procedure. You are not niddah, and do not have to go to the mikveh due to this bleeding.
