Markings for radiation treatment
November 12, 2015

Question

I have had cancer and am now undergoing radiation treatment. The only problem is they have marked me exactly where they need to do the radiation. The radiation treatment is everyday for one month. Am I allowed to go the mikva with the markings? It is not permanent and does rub off when washing, but they reinforce them every day.

I do not want to wait the month because it is very hard not having physical contact during this difficult period.

Answer

We are sorry to hear of your illness and wish you a refuah sheleimah.

The markings for radiation need not be removed for immersion. They are not considered a chatzitzah because they have no substance (they are just color absorbed into the skin, not a barrier between your body and the water), and because they will last for a prolonged period during which you want them to be there.
