Orange staining in shivah neki’im
May 31, 2009

Question

I am using a Mirena IUD and am on day 5 of the shiva nekiim. I noticed some light orange–ish streaking on my tissue today. I’m already wearing dark undergarments and doing bedikos on days 1 and 7– what do I do if day 7 has a stain? Are there certain colors that are for sure not good, or possibly good?
Thank you.

Answer

As a rule of thumb, yellows and light browns with no hint of a reddish tint are acceptable, but red or black shades are unacceptable. The range of colors in between, including orange, are best evaluated by a halachic authority. If you have a bedikah cloth with one of these colors, your best course of action is to bring it to a rav. Be sure to mention that you are using Mirena and that it is your seventh day. In addition to asking whether a given shade is acceptable, a woman can also ask whether it is a shade that she may assess herself in the future, since some cases require more expertise than others. (If you do not have someone local to ask, please get back to us with your location and we will try to make an appropriate referral.)

One last note is that there is a range of opinions on how to assess stains on toilet paper. For more information, please see our site’s article “Toilet Paper“.
