Protecting hair from chlorine in mikveh
December 14, 2015

Question

Anytime I go into a pool or otherwise chlorinated water, I put coconut oil in my hair to prevent the chlorine from damaging it. Would it be okay for me to have coconut oil in my hair in a mikvah?

Answer

Coconut oil left on your hair would be considered a chatzitzah since it would form an oily barrier between your hair and the mikvah water. You may use conditioner on your hair during your mikvah preparations, rinse it off well, and any coating that remains (protecting your hair) would not be considered a chatzitzah.
