Saw discharge exiting body
January 7, 2016

Question

I recently started on a birth control pill and started to develop staining after going to the mikvah. It is not enough to require a pad, and I am being careful to wear dark underwear. However, when I was lowering my underwear to go to the bathroom I noticed discharge coming out. I quickly wiped it with my dark underwear and could not say 100% what color it was. It was a dark color but I do not think it was pure blood. Am I a niddah?

Answer

Colored discharge seen exiting the body is considered a flow and not staining. Your status depends on the color of what you saw. (Ideally, you would have "transferred" the discharge onto toilet tissue or a white surface for evaluation.) Dark colors in discharge, even if not "pure blood" can make a woman niddah. A dark red, very dark brown, or blackish color would make you niddah.

Please get back to us or a local halachic authority with a more precise description of the color you saw.
