Veset when switching birth control pills
March 1, 2005

Question

My doctor switched me from regular Orthotricyclen to Orthotricyclen Lo. Previously I had established a veset haguf of three days after stopping the active pill. Do I now have to establish a new chazaka since the amount of hormone in the pill has changed? If so, what do I do in the meantime?

Thank you for providing this valuable service.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

The veset kavua that you established with the first pill will not be relevant when you begin the new formulation. You are starting anew as with any woman who begins combined hormonal contraceptives.

There are different views on how a woman should calculate vesatot when beginning the pill. We hold the view that you observe a veset on the last onah (day or night) of the range in which which the package instructions indicate that bleeding is likely to begin (e.g., day 4 of the placebos or break).

However, during the initial cycles on combined hormonal contraception, we recommend exercising caution before marital relations for the full range of days on which withdrawal bleeding might be expected (e.g., days 2-4). If you wish to have relations then, check first for bleeding by wiping externally with toilet paper, not immediately after urination. If you find signs of bleeding, you should abstain from relations as a precaution until the situation becomes clearer.

Please see our page on observing vesatot on hormonal contraception for more detailed guidance.

Be aware that with lower dosages there is more chance of breakthrough bleeding, so it is a good idea to be especially careful with the precautions outlined on our pages on stains and toilet paper.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
