Is IUD a chatzitzah?
December 10, 2002

Question

Is an IUD a barrier as far as immersion in the mikveh is concerned?

Answer

Because an IUD is completely internal, it is not considered a barrier. Even though the strings extend down through the vaginal canal, they can move freely, and are thus not considered a barrier. One should ascertain that there is nothing in the canal causing them to adhere to the walls. Therefore, during chafifah one should check the strings with one’s finger. This also assures that the IUD is in place and will perform its contraceptive function.
