White pantiliner when spotting
August 14, 2016

Question

I gave birth 8 weeks ago and went to the Mikvah around 10 days ago. I am on the mini pill, and have since began having pinkish watery spotting that I've seen on tissues, not immediately after urinating.

When do I need to consider this discharge a flow? I've heard that it's enough to need a pantyliner, but I'm not sure that applies because I wear a black one every day for comfort, as i often have clear/yellow discharge. I also find I need to change them frequently because the black ones I have are very poor quality and often get rolled up and uncomfortable. Will wearing regular white pantyliner render me niddah in this case?

Also, is it normal to experience this spotting on the mini pill when I am nursing full time? It seems to be accompanied by an uncomfortable vaginal burning sensation and I am wondering if the two could be related.

Answer

Mazal tov on the birth of your baby!

It is difficult to make a precise distinction between spotting and a flow, but a flow is generally enough to require a pad, not just a pantiliner. It sounds like you are experiencing spotting rather than a flow, and conducting yourself appropriately.

We follow the opinion that spotting on a white disposable pantiliner does not make you niddah. Therefore, it is fine to use white pantiliners if they are more comfortable for you.

Women react differently to the mini pill, and it is normal to have spotting with this form of contraception even when exclusively nursing. We recommend discussing the burning sensation with your physician.
