Question

There is a relatively new laser procedure called “Mona Lisa” to relieve menopausal symptoms. My understanding is that it is NOT cervical. Does the Mona Lisa render a woman niddah?

Answer

Based on our understanding of the procedure, laser therapy is performed on the vaginal walls to help improve vaginal atrophy. The instrument does not enter the uterus, so the procedure itself does not render a woman niddah. Any bleeding that occurs within 24 hours of the procedure may be attributed to trauma and disregarded. After 24 hours there still may be some staining, so one should take precautions against becoming niddah from further staining by wearing colored underwear or disposable pantyliners and waiting at least a few seconds (ideally 15 seconds) after urinating before wiping.

Please feel free to get back to us with any further questions.

This response has been updated to reflect the rulings of our current Rabbinic Supervisor, Rav Kenneth Auman, regarding waiting before wiping.
