Thyroid problem, irregular cycle
April 23, 2018

Question

I got married in August and before that my cycle was pretty regular. It lasted between 28-35 days. After I got married it lasted longer but I assumed it was because I went on the pill before the wedding. Eventually I had my period and everything was fine.

Now skip to the end of October when I had a regular period and then nothing for three months. We took multiple pregnancy tests but they were all negative. I got a few blood tests and was told that I had a thyroid problem and was given medication. Now again we are in the end of April and I still haven’t had my period since February. My husband and I are trying to conceive and this situation is proving to be quite complicated. Do you have any suggestions or advice? Thank you.

Answer

Mazal tov on your recent marriage!

We are sorry to hear of your difficulty conceiving and the special challenge that your thyroid condition presents.

You should begin by speaking with your endocrinologist to make sure that your medication is working and that your thyroid is functioning well. At that point, given your special circumstances, we recommend consulting with a reproductive endocrinologist. You can ask your regular endocrinologist, family doctor, or gynecologist for a referral.

You may also find it helpful to schedule a consultation with a Yoetzet Halacha Fertility Counselor. (This is a free service. Details here.)

Pleae feel free to get back to us with any further questions.

We wish you much hatzlacha!
