Question

I have been having issues with the birth control pills I have been using for almost 4 years (since my last child was born). I have very little libido (interested maybe every 7–10 days, a real mismatch from my husband's interest, which is 2–3 times a week). In addition, my eczema has gotten progressively worse since my starting this pill. I would look into IUD's but since I had vaginal varicose veins in my last pregnancy and I am very sensitive inside (I had pelvic pressure for a week after my last pap smear, and intercourse is often uncomfortable) I don't think I am a good candidate. I am just wondering what my options are for birth control…I am planning to visit a new gyno to discuss this more, but until now my obgyn discouraged switching methods if this one was working without breakthrough bleeding, etc. My question basically is if barrier methods are always asur or is there any room for heter? thanks.

Answer

We follow the halachic position that some barrier methods, including the diaphragm, sponge, and cervical cap, as well as spermicide, are halachically permissible forms of contraception. These methods vary in their level of efficacy and, given your sensitivity, you may find some of them uncomfortable. You can read more about them here.

Alternatively, we recommend speaking to your doctor about some of the newer/smaller types of IUDs that may cause less irritation. You will likely experience discomfort during and after the insertion, but after that initial period of time, you are not meant to feel the IUD internally.

It is important to stress to your doctor that although you are not experiencing any staining issues on the pill, the other side effects are having a negative effect on your quality of life. See our article on choosing a contraceptive method and speak to your doctor about finding a good choice for you. Sometime there is a bit of trial and error until you find a good fit.
