Veset Hachodesh: Blood on bedikah
November 26, 2020

Question

My period began on 14 Tishrei. I did a bedika on my veset hachodesh, 14 Cheshvan, which came out with blood. For the next almost two days I only had some spotting, but no flow. My period only began on 16 of Cheshvan.

How do I calculate my vestos for the coming month?

Answer

You calculate your vesatot based on the start of your flow (chodesh, haflagah, and onah beinonit).

In addition — a veset she’eino kavua is normally uprooted after one cycle, assuming it passes without bleeding. However, since you found blood on a bedikah on your veset hachodesh from Tishrei, that veset was not uprooted and you continue to observe it next month.

This means you will observe a veset on 14 Kislev (your yom hachodesh from Tishrei). You will also observe vesatot on 16 Kislev (both chodesh and onah beinonit from your most recent period) and on 19 Kislev (haflagah).

Note that this type of halachic nuance is not generally reflected in online veset apps.
