Adjusting cycle for vacation or may be niddah
December 28, 2015

Question

I wanted to know if you know of any methods to make my vacation work with my cycles. I can’t change the vacation dates because it’s a company paid vacation that they schedule. I’m currently on Erin (progesterone) pill and my periods are not exact but I should be getting my period about a week from today. The vacation starts in a little over two weeks, for five days. If I can’t adjust my cycle, mikva night would probably come out towards the end of the vacation.

So my question is, are there any methods I can use to get my period earlier (now) so I can go to the mikva before I leave, or delay it until I get back. And if I can’t do that, what are the halachos for going on vacation while nidda? I also don’t know if there is a mikva where I’m going. Thank you.

Answer

It may be possible to take an additional type of progesterone or increase the dose of your minipill to try to delay your period but it is not guaranteed. We recommend speaking to your doctor, who is familiar with your situation and can work with you to try to find an appropriate solution.

If you have children and it is a family vacation, it is less problematic to go on vacation while you are niddah, since you will be with your kids and not just your husband. If it is just you and your husband, you should avoid any romantic, intimate meals or activities. It would be preferable to avoid going on a vacation together while niddah, but if it is impossible to reschedule or manipulate your cycle, it is permissible as long as you avoid romantic or intimate activities.

You can search the worldwide mikvah directory to see if there is a mikvah in the general area where you will be spending your vacation. Alternatively, if there is a natural body of water such as a lake or an ocean, it may be permissible to immerse there. See our article on this topic for more information.
