Married woman donating hair
March 2, 2009

Question

I'm married and cover my hair. When I was single I got my hair cut and donated a 12 inch braid to Zichron Menachem, where they make wigs for kids with cancer. I would like to do that again. My question is whether people are allowed to see my hair once it is cut. That is, does it lose the status of erva after it is cut?

Answer

You may donate your hair to be used for a wig. The status of ervah applies only when the hair is attached to your head. Once it is cut, there is no longer a halachic concern about its being seen.
