Gym workout before mikveh?
February 15, 2009

Question

I was wondering if it is a problem to go to the gym and work out before I prepare for the mikvah? I live in a small city and mikvah is by appointment only. Sometimes the appointments are not available until later in the evening. I usually go to the gym in the evening with someone else. Is it still ok to go to the gym if it won't get in the way of my preparation? Or is it not a good idea, since I will be sweaty before preparation?

Thank you so much for your help.

Answer

It is permissible to go to the gym prior to immersing in the mikveh. The custom is to avoid sticky substances on mikveh day or other activities that will get in the way of preparations. So long as you take care to do a proper preparation subsequent to your exercise, there should not be a problem.

Try to think ahead to avoid problems. (For example, remove make-up prior to working out, etc.) If you find somehow that sweatiness is not easily reversed in the shower, as with matted hair, then you should seek a solution prior to scheduling mikveh this way again.
