Question

Invisalign is a type of orthodontia designed to straighten teeth by means of plastic aligners, which are removable. I recently began treatment to straighten my crooked teeth, and the orthodontist attached small white "buttons" on my teeth to hold the aligners in place. These buttons can only be removed by an orthodontist, and remain on the teeth until the conclusion of treatment (6 months for my top teeth, 12 months for the bottom). Are these buttons a chatzitzah?

Answer

Mikveh immersion with these composite attachments (sometimes called buttons) are permissible, since medical devices attached to the body for a prolonged period of time are not considered a chatzitzah. We also are more lenient with items that can only be removed professionally. In addition, items in the mouth are sometimes treated more leniently, since the mouth is considered beit hasetarim, a closed part of the body that is accessible and has to be clear of chatzitzot, but does not have to come into contact with mikveh water.

If braces or Invisalign attachments are placed solely for cosmetic purposes, some poskim would consider them a chatzitzah. Other poskim, including the halachic authority for this site, rule that women can pursue treatment and immerse in the mikveh without concern.

Before mikveh immersion, you should remove any temporary parts, and make sure all the attachments on your teeth are clean and in place.

Ideally, removal of the attachments at the conclusion of treatment should be scheduled for at least 7 days after mikveh immersion. If this presents a problem, please consult with a halachic authority.
