Vaginal atrophy spotting
May 11, 2005

Question

I have recently had brown spotting due to vaginal atrophy. (I was examined by a gynecologist and also had an ultrasound confirming that this was definitely the cause of the spotting. I am now using a hormonal cream and the situation has improved.) I am 69.
Do I have to count clean days and go to the mikve? (I am concerned that if I do the bedika with a piece of material, it will cause spotting again because of the fragility of the internal tissue.)
If I have to ask a shealat rav how do I go about doing it?
Thank you so much for your help.

Answer

We're sorry to hear of your condition, which is fairly common in post-menopausal women.

Since your bleeding is not uterine in origin, it does not render you a niddah.

You are not required to count clean days or go to the mikveh. Relations with your husband are permitted.
