Switching to POP at 50, breakthrough bleeding
July 14, 2026

Question

Hi. I'm 50 years old. For medical reasons, my doctor recently switched my birth control from Vienva (a combination pill that worked well for me) to Slynd (a progesterone only pill). The new pill is not a good option for me, I am having breakthrough bleeding all the time. What should I do?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out.

It is not unusual to experience irregular bleeding on the progesterone-only pill for the first 1-3 months as your body adjusts to it. Once you have adjusted to the pill, taking the pill at the same time each day may help prevent further staining.

If you have been on this pill longer than 3 months and are still experiencing frequent irregular bleeding, we recommend speaking to your doctor about trying a different contraceptive method, or even testing your hormonal levels to see if you are entering menopause yet. You can learn more about different birth control methods here.

That being said, it is important to note that not all staining will render a woman niddah or interfere with the clean days. Stains found on colored underwear may be disregarded. Stains found on toilet paper may be disregarded as long as you waited a few seconds after urinating before wiping. Please see our pages on Stains (Ketamim) and toilet paper for more details, and feel free to get back to us with any further questions.
