Question

It was recommended that I have a D&C for a uterine lining that is too thick (18mm). Does this procedure make me a niddah, do I have to count 5 days and 7 nikiyim?

Answer

Although one could theoretically argue that any bleeding from a D&C has the status of dam makkah (blood from a wound), the halachic consensus is that (with rare exceptions) the uterine bleeding from a D&C renders a woman niddah. Therefore, the day of the procedure will be the first of the five days, which will be followed by seven clean days. If there's a possibility of scheduling the procedure for shortly before your expected time of menstruation, we suggest that you do so.
