Healing after traumatic birth
September 6, 2023

Question

I had a very traumatic birth last year and started taking the combined pill so we can wait a couple of years before trying for another baby.
It’s been a few months now and I have been constantly bleeding so unable to make it to the mikvah.
I have had all the checks done by the gynecologist and she said that there is no obvious reason why I keep bleeding so much. She thinks that my body still hasn’t recovered from the birth trauma and therefore suffers from hormonal imbalances.
So what do I do now? How can I get to the mikvah and actually start healing and restore our intimacy?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
We are sorry to hear of the traumatic birth that you experienced and of the ensuing bleeding and challenge getting to the mikveh.
We consulted two physicians about this question, and they had a number of suggestions. First, to seek out a center or hospital-based clinic that specializes in helping women after traumatic birth, both physically and psychologically. Second, to get a second opinion and workup to see if you can clarify the source of the bleeding. Third, to consider shifting to a different form of contraceptive (even just a different pill formulation), to see if that reduces the incidence of irregular bleeding. We discuss many contraceptive options on the site, including halachic implications, under “Family Planning.”
With respect to halacha, it is sometimes possible to get to the mikveh even with staining. For example, a hefsek taharah need not be completely clear and even some browns are acceptable on it. We urge you to bring cloths to a halachic authority for evaluation rather than assuming that you cannot count the clean days. It also may prove helpful to you to review the laws of staining, as by seeing our site’s pages on stains and toilet paper.
Please get back to us with any follow up questions, and please share your location if you’d like our help with a local referral for niddah questions.
We wish you a refuah sheleimah, healing of body and soul.
