Mikveh during first trimester, progesterone suppositories
January 23, 2017

Question

I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant, and using vaginal progesterone suppositories to stop unexplained bleeding. I'm iyH going to the mikvah this Sunday after 2 straight weeks of niddah. I have a few questions.

1) Is it safe to take a chafifa bath in the first trimester?

2) The suppositories create a considerable amount of discharge. I can clean myself as best I can, but will any remining internal residue from the dissolved pill invalidate my tevila?

3) Is it ok to use the mikvah before other women while there is progesterone on the surface of my body? Will the hormonal residue present any danger for other women using the mikvah?

Answer

B'Sha'ah tovah!

1) It is safe to bathe during the first trimester. There is some concern about very hot baths at this stage of pregnancy but using warm water for chafifa is fine.

2) Clean out as much residue as possible without irritating yourself, but anything that remains is not considered a chatzitzah.

3) Any progesterone residue from your body is miniscule and will not affect other women using the mikvah.
