Salpingo-oophorectomy and D&C
July 15, 2025

Question

I had a bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy (removed my ovaries and fallopian tubes) along with a D&C (dilation and curettage).

They told me to expect some spotting and I have been having occasional light brown spotting, just a few smears here and there on a panty liner.

I have been hormonally suppressed for 10 years with lupron injections so have not been in niddah for a long time. Does the spotting from the procedure put me in niddah? Or because we know it is not my period and from a surgery it does not? Thanks!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out.

Light brown spotting generally would not make you niddah (see our page on stains for a detailed discussion). A bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy also would not make you niddah. However, a D&C does make you niddah even though it is not your period, and even if you are not regularly menstruating (learn more here).

The usual taharah process applies, including the minimum wait, hefsek taharah, and seven clean days. The day of the D&C counts as the first day of the minimum wait (if your custom is to count from the time you become niddah).

In this case you may reduce the number of bedikot to the hefsek taharah, and one bedikah each on days 1 and 7 of the clean days, and on one of the intermediate clean days. Note that light brown (the color of coffee with milk or lighter) with no reddish tinge is not a niddah color and would not invalidate a bedikah.
