Staining after vaginal ultrasound in clean days
04/01/2023

Question

Hello. I am after a miscarriage and thought my bleeding had ended. My hefsek yesterday was clean so I was counting today as Day 1. I wasn’t wearing white underwear because I had a transvaginal ultrasound this morning and was worried I would have some bleeding with it. I didn’t have bleeding right afterwards, but tonight I saw bleeding on toilet paper when wiping. I noticed staining on my underwear tonight as well but since it was not white I could not tell the color on the underwear. I did a bedikah this morning before the ultrasound and didn’t do one this afternoon. Can I keep counting? Or do I need to do a new hefsek taharah? Thank you.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
We are sorry to hear of your miscarriage.
Staining on colored underwear does not make a woman niddah, nor does it interrupt the clean days.
Your status would thus ordinarily depend on the details of what you saw on toilet paper. However, in this specific case, you may attribute what you saw on the day of the ultrasound to irritation from the procedure and continue your clean days as planned.
If there was additional discharge later, it would be more difficult to attribute it to the procedure, because bleeding following miscarriage can come and go. However, it would still be subject to the usual leniencies of stains.
