Tiny black specks on bedikah cloth
15/12/2021

Question

Hi! I was wondering if you can help me. I remember learning about the color black as being a questionable color. My question is what that’s supposed to look like on a bedika cloth?
Very often when I do a bedika there are very small black dots (almost like dirt or dust), or even less often like tiny, tiny hair-like pieces…
Are these things considered a questionable black color?
Thanks so much!

Answer

It is permissible to disregard a tiny speck of black that can be easily brushed off of a bedikah cloth or that is identifiable as a foreign body. (A magnifying glass may prove helpful for this).
Other black spots may indeed invalidate the cloth, and should be evaluated by a halachic authority. When you have them evaluated, you can ask about how they are being assessed and how you might apply the principles used to checking your bedikah cloths in the future.
